Our
History
Avonde Calisthenics College was
established in 1965 by Jill Jacobsen (now Goss) after 7 years of
coaching Essendon Christ Church Calisthenics. Opened in
Avondale Heights with 67 pupils, Avonde has recently achieved a
milestone of over 40 years in existence, and is a vibrant and
competitive Championship grade club established in the northern
suburbs of Melbourne.
The principal, Jill Goss, was a
calisthenics student at age 4 and the calisthenics way-of-life
has been instilled in thousands of children throughout the
40-plus years of the club, resulting in multiple
third-generation students, and many second-generation students,
as the club's reputation for excellence is regularly
demonstrated at:
- the competitions attended each year,
- the representatives of both coaches
and performers at state team level, and
- the individual honours achieved by
many Avonde pupils, including the attainment of the South
Street Most Graceful Girl title by a select few of our
students.
Jill has relinquished some of the
creative control of each age section to an amazingly talented
array of coaches, all of whom have been Avonde pupils
themselves. Jill mentors and assists these coaches on a
weekly basis, combining her tremendous experience both as an
Avonde coach and Principal and a qualified Adjudicator for 38
years. Well known in the Calisthenics word, Jill regularly
presents lectures at coaches forums throughout Australia (and
mother to the Shane and Clayton 'Kenny' fame!)
